We are a non-profit group working within Newcastle University, which is itself a registered charity.

In our mission to advance scientific knowledge to help those affected by tinnitus around the world, we are dependent upon the generosity of many people: our volunteers who donate their time and effort, staff and students working within and collaborating with our group, the governmental and charitable organisations that award research funding, and Newcastle university itself which uses its own funds to cover the remainder of the cost of conducting research that is not covered by research grants.

Funding medical research is still immensely challenging, especially in the current economic climate. Tinnitus is not currently seen as a priority area for research by any government funding agencies, and applications to conduct tinnitus research are up against proposals from all areas of medicine.

The reality is that there are far more research studies and trials we could be running if we had more funds to do so. It is particularly important also to have funds to conduct innovative pilot studies, where we are trying out a new approach for the very first time, in small numbers of volunteers, as these are often essential to have been done first to obtain research grants, but still require money to perform.
